Toronto enters this series riding a hot streak, having won five of six games since the All-Star break. That surge has helped them create a four-game cushion over the Yankees in the AL East. The Blue Jays’ offense has found its rhythm, highlighted by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reaching base 11 times across the past four games, including a two-RBI performance in Wednesday’s 8-4 victory over New York.
Eric Lauer (5-2, 2.80 ERA) gets the ball for Toronto. The lefty is coming off one of his best starts of the season, holding the Giants to just two runs in six strong innings with seven strikeouts. While Lauer has been consistent this year, his track record against Detroit is concerning, 0-2 with a 13.50 ERA in three career starts. He’ll need to turn that around if Toronto wants to keep its post-break momentum alive.
Detroit Tigers
Detroit has hit a wall, losing nine of its last ten games, and its AL Central lead has shrunk to just eight games over Cleveland. The Tigers were just swept by the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates and will look to reset as they return home for this four-game set.
Reese Olson (4-3, 2.71 ERA) will start the opener and remains a bright spot for Detroit. Since returning from a finger injury, Olson has been sharp, allowing only three runs over 14 1/3 innings (1.88 ERA) across three starts. He also dominated the Blue Jays earlier this season, holding them to one hit in six scoreless innings. Against Toronto, he boasts an impressive 0.55 ERA in four career appearances.
The Tigers’ offense has cooled off significantly, especially All-Star Riley Greene, who is just 3-for-21 with 10 strikeouts since the break. Manager A.J. Hinch even gave him a day off on Wednesday as the team fell 6-1 to Pittsburgh.
Prediction
Momentum clearly favors Toronto, but Olson’s dominance over the Jays can’t be ignored. If the Tigers’ bats can wake up, they could edge out a close game behind their young right-hander. Still, the Blue Jays’ form makes them the better bet.
