Thunder Storm Rolling Through the NBA

The defending champs have opened their title defense looking like a finely tuned machine that forgot how to miss shots inside the arc and how to make them from three. The Oklahoma City Thunder are 5-0, the NBA’s last undefeated team, yet they’re clanking threes like it’s part of a team-building exercise. They rank dead last at 28.8% from deep, which means even their pregame shootarounds probably sound like a construction site.

Coach Mark Daigneault isn’t panicking just yet. “It’s a small sample,” he said, which is the polite coach-speak version of “please stop tweeting at me.” The Thunder know they’re winning ugly right now, but when you’re the only team left without a loss, ugly looks pretty good on the standings page.

The Thunder pulled off a 107-101 comeback win over Sacramento thanks to their usual brand of chaos, fast, relentless, and anchored by Luguentz Dort, who currently couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat from three-point range (17.9%). But Dort’s defense still looks elite, and he’s embracing his inner bricklayer with confidence. As long as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander keeps doing Shai things and Josh Giddey keeps pretending he’s a 6’8” point guard from another galaxy, the Thunder can afford a few cold nights.

Wizards Trying to Find the Magic

Meanwhile, in Washington, defense is more of a rumor than a reality. The Wizards have given up 139 points in back-to-back games, which is impressive in the same way accidentally lighting your kitchen on fire is impressive. They’ve started 1-3 and are still trying to figure out what “team defense” actually means.

The good news? Rookie sensation Alex Sarr looks like the real deal. The second overall pick is averaging nearly 20 points and 9 rebounds per game and somehow already looks like the best passer on the roster. The bad news? Marvin Bagley might be out, and the Wizards’ rotation currently has the defensive integrity of a screen door in a hurricane.

Bilal Coulibaly is expected to make his season debut, which should at least help them stay under 150 points allowed. But against a team that’s 6-0 against them since 2022, it’s a tall order, especially when you’re playing in a building where Chet Holmgren’s height is the only thing missing (he’s sitting out again).

NBA Prediction

Washington will bring effort, buckets, and probably a few defensive breakdowns that make their coach question his career choices. Oklahoma City will continue to look like the league’s most efficient mess, winning games even when the rim refuses to cooperate.

This has all the makings of a one-sided laugh fest. The Wizards might keep it close for a quarter or two before reality sets in and Shai takes over.

Final Score:  Thunder 126, Wizards 108
