Detroit might not have gotten the Christmas Day spotlight, but they absolutely got the memo. The Pistons showed up west of the Mississippi with a massive chip on their shoulder and a suitcase full of confidence. Owning the best record in the Eastern Conference apparently still earns you a holiday road trip, so Detroit responded by stacking wins and collecting receipts.
This nine day road swing already delivered gritty wins in Portland and a fireworks filled shootout in Sacramento. The Kings game turned into a track meet where it felt like everyone on Detroit’s bench scored at least once. Coach JB Bickerstaff tried naming the heroes afterward and nearly read the entire roster. That is a good problem to have.
Detroit rolled into Salt Lake City sitting at 24 and 6, which puts them in rare historical company. The last time things felt this good in Motown, flip phones were cool and defensive basketball ruled the earth. This version of the Pistons scores in bunches, defends in waves, and somehow keeps finding new contributors every night.
Cade Cunningham remains the face of it all. He is calm, lethal, and plays like he knows exactly when to twist the knife. Detroit thrives when games get chaotic, and Utah’s defense has been handing out chaos like free samples.
Jazz Defense Needs GPS Directions
Utah stayed home for the holidays, but Santa did not bring defensive stops. The Jazz enter this matchup riding a four game losing streak that looks more like a highlight reel for opposing offenses. If points were frequent flyer miles, Utah would be booking free vacations.
The Jazz are allowing points at a historic rate, and communication on defense has been about as consistent as holiday WiFi. Coach Will Hardy has been candid about the issues, especially missed switches and silent defenders. Saying nothing while your man drains an open jumper is not a strategy.
Lauri Markkanen remains Utah’s shining light. He can score from anywhere and keeps the Jazz competitive longer than expected. The problem is that every time Utah scores, the other team scores right back, usually with less resistance.

This matchup features two elite scorers who genuinely enjoy trading buckets. Cade Cunningham and Lauri Markkanen have already produced one classic this season, and history suggests this one could get loud again. The difference is Detroit arrives deeper, sharper, and far more connected.
Utah can hang around early, but Detroit’s depth eventually turns close games into comfortable ones. When the Pistons push pace late, the Jazz defense tends to unravel.
