San Diego State finished the 2021-22 as the 25th ranked team in the nation and that’s also where they are starting 2022-23. They are coming off an excellent season where they finished 12-2 -a franchise record for wins-, they won the Mountain West, West Division, before falling to Utah State in the Championship game.
The Aztecs shrugged off the loss in beating UTSA 38-24 in the Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl. The 24 points allowed was the fourth most they allowed all season and second most in a win.
That is notable, as it’s their defense that makes them dangerous and this year they’ll be returning seven starters from the unit.
The bigger question mark will be on offense. 1,091 yard rusher Greg Bell graduated and three starters from the offensive line have moved on as well.
But they do have two super senior running backs returning in Chance Bell and Jordan Byrd who combined to score seven touchdowns last year and two new intriguing options in USC transfer Kenan Christon and 220-pound redshirt freshman Jaylon Armstead.
They’ll also have a new quarterback this year, but it should be an upgrade with Power 5 starter Braxton Burmeister coming over from Virginia Tech. The homegrown talent passed for 1,960 yards, 14 TDs and four interceptions last year.

This is not a bet I would take, as they are missing both the talent and the strength of schedule to make a real run at top contender status.
Verdict: Skip it
Odds to win the 2022 Mountain West Conferences: +450
They are the fourth strongest favorite heading into the season to win the Mountain West Conference, trailing Boise State, Fresno State and Air Force. They’ll play all three of those teams as part of their regular season schedule. They will also open their season with a tough test against PAC-12 champion Utah.
Their biggest competition coming out of the West Division is Fresno State who will have to get through USC as part of their out of conference schedule.
That matchup is likely to feature one of the best offenses in the conference in Fresno State taking on one of the best defenses. I don’t think they match up well against another team full of veterans and elite talent that is stronger on defense than San Diego State is on offense.
A loss in that game makes their path out of the West Division tough to foresee.

2022 Regular Season Win Total: Over 7½ (-130)
San Diego State has a lot of returning players to the lineup, they were the conference runner’s up last year and they would have covered the over on this total eight of the last 11 times they played a full regular season (minus the 2020 Covid-shortened season).
This is an experienced team that is also returning to its home stadium after two seasons away.
Verdict: Yes, worth the wager
