Detroit Pistons 2022-23 NBA Preview, Season Odds, Props & Futures Predictions

Youth Movement Set to Hit Turbo Drive in Detroit

The team that calls the motor city its home seems well on track to becoming one of the most exciting young teams in the NBA. Detroit already had the 2020 ROY PG Cade Cunningham, SF Saddiq Bey and C Isaiah Stewart to build around. Now they’ve added Jaden Ivey who fell to them at number five in the 2022 draft and C Jalen Duren after a complicated trade with New York, via Charlotte.

Ivey seems like a perfect running mate to pair with Cunningham.

Duren is getting compared to Chris Webber in the very early going and he and Ivey were lights out showcasing their athleticism during summer league.

This is a team building the right way, with elite young talent, wily veterans in Cory Joseph, Nerlens Noel and Kemba Walker along with young reclamation projects.

They added two recent lottery picks that fell out of favor with their former teams and if any of Marvin Bagley (#2 in 2018), Kevin Knox (#9 in 2018) or their own Killian Hayes (#7 in 2020) hits, that will be like found money.

Liev Jackson NBA Season Prediction on Pistons:

Teams like this that have little pressure to win are intriguing, because they also have little incentive to tank. It is time to start seeing what this team is made of.

On paper it says the Pistons are still at least a year away from being a playoff threat. A lack of three-point shooting and the inevitable growing pains will limit them this season. Still, they are also capable of surprising people as their young talent matures in real time.

As such, there could be some great value to be had as a long shot in spite the stacked East. Still, if they can get off to a decent start, a play-in finish and possible playoff appearance remains their ceiling.

Favorite bets for the season at current odds include:

  • 2022-23 Regular Season Win Total: Over 28½ (-115)
  • Most Improved Player: Cade Cunningham +2000
  • Rookie OTY: Jaden Ivey +700
  • Make the Playoffs: Yes +1400 (worth a small bet)

2021-22 Record: 23-59
My Record Prediction:
 37-45
