Golden State Still Chasing the Dream
Golden State enters Wednesday at 26-11, four games behind first-place Minnesota with seven left. Translation: the Valkyries still have a pulse, but somebody better keep the standings calculator plugged in.
They snapped a two-game skid Monday by beating Minnesota 80-66. Cecilia Zandalasini led with 18 points, Gabby Williams had 15, Veronica Burton and Tiffany Hayes scored 14 each, and Janelle Salaun added 12. Golden State has also owned Connecticut this season, winning 97-70 in May and 79-64 in July.
Connecticut Has the Worst Possible Schedule
Connecticut is 10-27 but just beat Chicago 87-81 Tuesday night. Aaliyah Edwards returned from an ankle injury and exploded for a career-high 26 points with a season-best 10 rebounds. Diamond Miller added 21 and Kennedy Burke scored 19.
Great performance. Tiny problem: now they get Golden State less than 24 hours later. Because apparently the WNBA schedule was designed by someone who dislikes sleep.
Brittney Griner has missed five straight games with a knee injury, while Olivia Nelson-Ododa also sat Tuesday with a knee issue. That is less than ideal when facing a Valkyries team already favored by 14.
LVSB Betting Take
Golden State has beaten Connecticut twice by 15-plus points and comes in rested compared with a Sun team playing the second night of a back-to-back.
Connecticut should get another strong effort from Edwards, but maintaining Tuesday’s energy for four quarters against Golden State is asking a lot.
