WNBA Preview and Prediction: Golden State Valkyries vs. Los Angeles Sparks
Spread: Los Angeles -7.0 | Total: 162.5
Golden State Valkyries Outlook
Golden State heads into Monday’s Commissioner’s Cup tilt as 7-point underdogs, with the total set at 162.5. After a rough four-game losing streak, the Valkyries finally showed their potential by absolutely dismantling Las Vegas 95-68 on Saturday, their most dominant outing of the season, both offensively and defensively.
The offense looked alive for the first time in weeks, with Kayla Thornton dropping 22 points to lead five players in double figures. It was a true team effort, exactly the kind of 80-possession, full-throttle performance coach Natalie Nakase has been preaching about all season.
Defensively, holding the Aces to 68 was a franchise-best showing, beating their previous mark set against this same Sparks team in their last meeting. If Golden State can replicate that same energy on both ends of the floor, they’ll be tough to put away.
Still, inconsistency has been a problem all year, and the Sparks will likely bring more firepower this time around.
Los Angeles Sparks Outlook
The Sparks are 7-point favorites at home and looking to string together some wins after snapping a three-game skid on Friday. Their 93-79 win over Dallas featured their highest scoring output of the season, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Azura Stevens led the way with 21 points, bouncing back strong from a quiet five-point outing in her previous game. Dearica Hamby and Odyssey Sims chipped in 20 and 19 respectively, while all five starters finished in double figures.
Head coach Lynne Roberts praised Stevens for her professionalism and steady presence, she’s now had four 20+ point games on the year. That said, her production against Golden State has been limited, totaling just 17 points across their two meetings.
The Sparks are 1-1 in Commissioner’s Cup play and seem to be trending upward, especially on the offensive end. The question is whether their defense can keep pace, they allowed at least 85 points in three straight losses prior to Friday.
Prediction
Golden State’s recent blowout win could be a sign they’ve turned a corner, but the Sparks are at home, coming off their own offensive explosion, and have more veteran stability. Expect a competitive first half before L.A. pulls away late.
