Is Sports Betting Legal in Arizona?
Betting in Arizona is limited to tribal casinos, horse and dog racing – though not on the same day – and the state lottery. The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) regulates the industry through working with tribes, that are governed by Tribal-State Gaming Compacts.
The compacts between the state and 21 tribes were negotiated in 1993 and 2001 for approved Class III gaming activities on tribal lands. The 2003 Compact further set forth types of permitted games, as well as technical standards for gaming machines, authorizing inspections of casinos, ordering background investigations and licensing of casino employees and vendor companies. Additionally, it required tribes to contribute 1-8% of their gaming revenue to state and local governments.
The legal age for lottery and charity gambling is 18; however, a minimum age of 21 applies to casinos and racing wagers.
Tribal Casinos
Tribal Casinos are the only venues for gambling in Arizona. There are 16 tribes running 26 Class III casinos, garnering slot machine rights from five other tribes through transfer agreements. All of these casinos are located on Indian Reserves and authorized by the Arizona Tribal-State Compacts, allowing a maximum of 18,158 slot machines and 3,318 blackjack/poker tables, with a maximum wager limit per play of $29.
Sports Betting In Arizona
