Defensive Emergency Meeting
The Sparks and Mercury enter Thursday night desperately searching for answers, mostly on defense, where both teams have recently treated opposing shooters like honored dinner guests. Toronto just rolled through both squads dropping points everywhere like it was NBA Jam with cheat codes activated.
Phoenix allowed Brittney Sykes to score 31 points Tuesday after she casually dropped 38 on Los Angeles days earlier. At this point, Sykes probably deserves partial ownership of both franchises.
Meanwhile, the Mercury defense watched Marina Mabrey rain six three-pointers while apparently conducting scientific experiments on what happens when nobody contests perimeter shots.
Spoiler alert: bad things happen.
Los Angeles Sparks: Defensive Panic Continues
The Sparks are officially entering the “trust the process” phase, which is sports language for “please remain calm while everything catches fire.” Los Angeles has lost three of four games despite Kelsey Plum doing absolutely everything short of selling popcorn at halftime.
Plum exploded for 28 points against Toronto while shooting 9 of 14 from the field. Unfortunately, the Sparks also committed 32 fouls, which is approximately one foul every time somebody blinked. Toronto attempted 42 free throws because Los Angeles apparently confused defense with aggressive hugging.
The bright side is the offense actually looked solid overall. The Sparks shot over 51 percent from the floor and moved the ball reasonably well. The bad news is their defense currently has the structural integrity of wet cardboard.
Still, this team plays hard, and Plum’s scoring ability keeps them dangerous in competitive games.
Phoenix Mercury: Missing Every Three
Phoenix somehow managed to lose despite Alyssa Thomas and Natasha Mack shooting nearly perfectly from the floor. That takes commitment. Thomas finished with 17 points and eight assists while Mack added a double-double, yet the Mercury still shot 4 of 22 from three-point range as a team.
Four.
Of.
Twenty-two.
That is not basketball. That is emotional damage with a scoreboard attached.
The Mercury clearly miss consistent perimeter shooting, and until somebody outside the paint remembers how jumpers work, opposing defenses will happily pack the lane.
The good news for Phoenix bettors is the schedule finally helps them. They stay home while Los Angeles hits the road for the first time this season. The Mercury also tend to respond well after embarrassing defensive performances because professional athletes generally dislike being publicly roasted on highlight shows.
LVSB Final Score Prediction
Both defenses currently look like optional suggestions, so points should arrive quickly. Expect Kelsey Plum to keep attacking while Phoenix finally shoots better at home.
Final Score: Mercury 94, Sparks 88
