New England Patriots Looking to Recapture AFC East Crown

The New England Patriots were well on their way to regain their dominance of the AFC East when they gathered seven consecutive wins only to lose three of their last four regular season games relinquishing the division title to the Bills. They were trashed by those same Bills in the Wild Card Playoffs and now will look to refocus towards a new year with their second-year signal-caller Mac Jones listening to a new voice calling his plays.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels went on to greener pastures in Las Vegas and it looks like it will be a collaborative play-calling effort to guide the Alabama product. Jones will see his core of receivers improve dramatically with former Dolphin DeVante Parker joining the ranks and rookie Tyquan Thornton adding some speed at the position. TE Hunter Henry was one of Jones’ favorite target last season along with WR Jakobi Meyers and Nelson Agholor who are bound to progress.

RB Damien Harris came within 71 yards to reach the 1,000-yard plateau and reached the end zone on 15 occasions and that trend should continue as the Patriots enjoyed the ground game last season with the elements playing a major role come December. New England’s defense was one of the best in 2021 but it declined in the latter part of the season due to their lack of speed against QB’s with great run-pass options capabilities. They have addressed that situation in the offseason.

The Patriots start their season with two road games at Miami and Pittsburgh which is no picnic and then host Baltimore then visit Green Bay the next week. Their schedule gets much easier after that strenuous stretch.

Mac Jones is mature beyond his years but the sophomore jinx could take its toll on the young signal-caller. However, don’t dismiss the quality of play from a young talent like Jones especially with Bill Belichik looking over your shoulders while finding ways to improvise on the spot virtuoso schemes. While the Patriots aren’t quite ready to compete against the Bills for a division title, but a Wildcard spot is certainly in their grasp considering who is at the helm of this squad.
Last year’s record: 10-7
My Prediction: 10-7
