The New York Liberty keep showing up like that friend who says they’re leaving the party… then somehow wins karaoke. Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Aces are back home, refreshed, recharged, and hoping someone finally reminded them defense is part of basketball.
New York enters on a three-game winning streak after surviving a wild 113-109 shootout against Los Angeles. Breanna Stewart looked unstoppable with 29 points, seven assists and knocked down 2-of-4 from deep, while Sabrina Ionescu added 27 points and buried 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Liberty have also enjoyed seeing the Aces lately, winning both meetings this season and probably keeping the receipts.
Defense Must Matter
Las Vegas responded after the All-Star break by making sure Portland never had a chance to dream. A’ja Wilson continued her MVP campaign with a monster 28-point, 14-rebound performance while shooting 7-of-10 from the field and an absurd 13-of-14 at the free-throw line. Jackie Young added 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting, proving the Aces still have plenty of firepower when they aren’t busy handing opponents surprise comeback opportunities.
Coach Becky Hammon has made her message painfully clear: play defense or prepare for another lecture. After ugly losses to Indiana and Washington before the break, Las Vegas knows scoring isn’t the problem. Stopping somebody occasionally would be a nice change of pace.
Bovada Oddsmakers have installed the Aces as 4-point favorites with a total of 182, setting up what should be another entertaining battle between two championship contenders. New York has owned the season series, but playing in Las Vegas is a different animal, especially when Wilson starts treating the paint like her personal living room.
Prediction: The Liberty keep it close, but the Aces finally return the favor and snap the season skid against New York.
