After a thrilling 12-pitch at-bat culminating in his first career grand slam, Kansas City Royals left fielder MJ Melendez aims to maintain his momentum into Sunday’s clash against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Melendez and the Royals are set to face the Dodgers in the decisive game of their three-game series following a 7-2 victory on Saturday.
Prior to Saturday’s game, Melendez had struggled with a 4-for-41 slump at the plate. However, he broke out with two hits, including the pivotal grand slam in the sixth inning off Blake Treinen.
"It’s a great feeling to see him succeed because he’s been grinding, putting in the work," commented Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro on Melendez’s performance. "To lift the team like that in a crucial moment was special. I’m really pleased for him."
Facing a full count after Treinen loaded the bases with walks, Melendez battled through six foul balls and a ball before driving Treinen’s 3-2 pitch over the right-field fence.
