Game Preview
Chris Sale signed with the Atlanta Braves in the offseason aiming to revive his career. The left-hander likely didn’t anticipate an All-Star nod as one of the National League’s top pitchers.
Fresh off earning his eighth All-Star selection — and first since 2018 — Sale (11-3, 2.71 ERA) takes the mound Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Sale is tied for the major league lead in wins and ranks sixth in strikeouts (127) and eighth in ERA.
At 35, Sale made seven consecutive All-Star appearances from 2012-18 for the American League, starting the last three, before injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2020, derailed his career.
"It’s definitely satisfying and I appreciate it, for sure," Sale said Sunday after his NL team selection. "After going through those tough years, you start to wonder if it’s possible again. Being in this position and having a team take a chance on me means a lot."
Sale previously made five All-Star appearances with the Chicago White Sox and two with the Boston Red Sox, striking out a career-high 308 batters in 2017 for Boston.
Sale has allowed two or fewer runs in 11 of his last 12 starts, with the exception of a rough outing against the Oakland Athletics on June 1, where he gave up eight runs in four innings during a no-decision.
