Home Run Derby 2024
The MLB Home Run Derby is set for Monday night at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Here’s everything you need to know to join in on the excitement.
New Rules Overview:
First Round Format: The competition starts with a non-head-to-head round where the top four hitters advancing based on the number of home runs hit. These top performers will be seeded according to their results for the subsequent head-to-head semifinals.
Tiebreakers: In case of ties in the first round, the player with the longest home run will get the higher seed or advance.
Pitching and Time Limits: Each batter has a three-minute limit per the first two rounds, with a maximum of 40 pitches allowed. This is intended to reduce the rush and potential fatigue for pitchers. Players are also entitled to a 45-second timeout in each of these rounds.
Final Round: This round will consist of 27 pitches, with no time limit imposed.
Bonus Time: Players will receive additional bonus swings at the end of each round, which will continue until three "outs" are made (any swings not resulting in a home run). Hitting a home run that travels at least 425 feet awards an extra out.
Tiebreaker Rounds: If needed, a 60-second swing-off will resolve ties in the semifinals or finals, during which no timeouts are allowed.
