Game Preview
The Atlanta Braves, already dealing with injuries, are set to begin a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.
The day began unfavorably for Atlanta as they placed All-Star pitcher Max Fried on the 15-day injured list retroactive to Thursday due to left forearm neuritis. Braves manager Brian Snitker expressed optimism about the severity of Fried’s injury, stating, "I don’t think it’s serious, and neither does Max. It’s something he felt during warm-ups at the All-Star Game, but we don’t anticipate it will be an extended absence."
However, the Braves faced a more significant setback later in the day. Second baseman Ozzie Albies, a key player for Atlanta, sustained a left wrist fracture after colliding with a base runner in the ninth inning of their 6-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Albies is expected to miss about two months. "It didn’t look good," commented Atlanta catcher Travis d’Arnaud. "He knew it was serious immediately and walked off the field right away."
Albies has been a crucial player for Atlanta, batting .258 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs across 90 games this season. To fill his spot, the Braves will call up 21-year-old infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. from Triple-A Gwinnett, who has hit .336 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 28 games at that level.
To replace Fried, Atlanta has summoned left-hander Dylan Dodd from Triple-A. Dodd made seven starts for Atlanta in 2023 with a 2-2 record and a 7.60 ERA and has a 4.99 ERA in 17 games (15 starts) at Gwinnett this season.
Despite these challenges, the Braves still have strength in their rotation, led by All-Star Reynaldo Lopez (7-3, 1.88 ERA), who will start Monday’s game. Lopez has been consistent, allowing no more than three runs in any of his 17 starts this season. He last pitched on July 13, surrendering three runs and 11 hits in a loss to the San Diego Padres.
Lopez’s counterpart from Cincinnati will be All-Star Hunter Greene (6-4, 3.34 ERA), who will make his 20th start of the season. Greene last pitched on July 11 against the Colorado Rockies, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out 10.
