Game Preview
Nick Gonzales has quickly proven to be a key player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, despite being a rookie. Since being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on May 10, Gonzales has become a clutch performer, leading the team with eight game-winning RBIs in his first 61 games.
The Pirates are set to continue their three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, aiming to secure the series after Monday’s 2-1 victory, where Gonzales drove in the decisive run with an eighth-inning single. This isn’t new for him; just last Friday, he delivered a game-winning single in the ninth for a walk-off victory against the Philadelphia Phillies.
"I think my heartbeat is going pretty good in those moments," Gonzales admitted. "I try to slow it down, but it just gets me more locked in. I try to not do too much."
Currently on a five-game hitting streak, Gonzales has hit safely in 13 of the 17 games this July.
Tuesday’s game is pivotal for the Pirates, who are close to tying with the Cardinals for second place in the National League Central, having won nine of their last 11 games. "Every win’s great, especially against a division rival," pitcher Mitch Keller noted after Monday’s game. "These are games we need to win."
Rookie sensation Paul Skenes (6-0, 1.90 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Pittsburgh. In his debut against St. Louis on June 11, Skenes delivered a standout performance with no runs allowed and eight strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. His last start before the All-Star break saw him throwing seven no-hit innings against the Milwaukee Brewers, adding to his impressive rookie campaign.
The Cardinals will respond with veteran right-hander Lance Lynn (5-4, 4.39 ERA), who has a 7-8 record and a 5.34 ERA in 25 career appearances against Pittsburgh. Lynn’s last encounter with the Pirates on June 13 ended after 4 1/3 innings, during which he gave up three runs.
