Game Preview

The Detroit Tigers are aware that Jack Flaherty could be traded by the end of the month. In the meantime, the veteran right-hander is focused on maintaining his strong performance this season as he prepares for another start against the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday. This outing could potentially be one of his last for Detroit.

Flaherty, who is on a one-year contract with the Tigers, may use this season as a springboard to rejuvenate his career financially, whether through a trade before next week’s deadline or in future opportunities in 2025.

Flaherty (7-5, 3.13 ERA) has been impressive since May 30, posting a 6-1 record with a 2.04 ERA. His last appearance resulted in a 5-4 victory over Toronto, where he gave up a two-run homer among three hits and struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings.

"My job every day is to go out there and try to win," Flaherty emphasized. "No matter what’s happening around me or what time of the season it is, the goal is always to win."

Flaherty has a 1-2 record with a 2.89 ERA in five career starts against Cleveland. This season, he’s split two starts against the Guardians, allowing three runs over 12 innings. In his most recent outing against them on July 11, he gave up a homer to Bo Naylor and one other hit in six innings, leading to a 10-1 victory.

"He’s been a cornerstone for us, consistently delivering great performances," teammate Mark Canha mentioned, as reported by MLB.com.

Detroit began the current four-game series with an 8-2 win, but suffered a 5-4 defeat on Tuesday. Wenceel Perez hit a two-run homer in the loss. Despite being two games under .500, the Tigers are in a strong 11-4 run.

They’ll face Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee (8-4, 3.58 ERA) next, who has struggled against Detroit, going 0-3 with a 6.86 ERA in four starts. Bibee allowed four runs and five hits in his last start against the Tigers on July 10, also marking a 5-4 defeat.
