Game Preview

The Boston Red Sox evidently liked what they saw from James Paxton when he pitched against them for the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 21. Just five days later, they traded for him.

Paxton, who is rejoining the Red Sox after spending last season with them, will start for Boston on Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners in the second game of a three-game series.

"It feels like I never left," Paxton said. "I got welcomed by everybody, and it feels really good to be here. I’m comfortable here and just excited to be a part of what we got going on."

The 35-year-old left-hander had a solid run with the Dodgers this season, going 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 18 starts. He earned a win against Boston earlier this month, allowing three runs in five-plus innings. He was designated for assignment the next day.

Paxton, who posted a 7-5 record and 4.50 ERA in 19 starts for the Red Sox last year, previously faced Seattle once, earning the win with two runs allowed in five innings on August 28, 2019. He began his major league career with the Mariners and had a brief return in 2021 before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Seattle’s Luis Castillo (8-10, 3.38 ERA) will start for the Mariners. Castillo, who saw his team’s three-game winning streak end with a 14-7 loss to Boston on Monday, is 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA in three career starts against the Red Sox. He lost to Boston on Opening Day this year after giving up four runs in five innings.

In Monday’s opener, the Red Sox amassed 16 hits, including a season-high 11 extra-base hits. Masataka Yoshida led with a two-run homer and contributed three hits and four RBIs. He is batting .347 with three doubles, three home runs, and 20 RBIs over his past 20 games, bringing a six-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s matchup.
