Game Preview

Xander Bogaerts is heating up, and the San Diego Padres are reaping the benefits.

As the Padres prepare for a two-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers starting Tuesday, Bogaerts is in the midst of a power surge. On Saturday, he doubled twice and tripled in a 9-4 win over the Orioles. He followed that up with a two-run homer in Sunday’s 8-6 loss to Baltimore. Before this hot streak, Bogaerts had managed only 17 singles in his previous 18 hits.

"I think it’s just the way the game is," Bogaerts said. "You get a lot of singles, then you get a lot of extra-base hits. They come in bunches. I wasn’t getting anything earlier in the season."

Since returning from a shoulder injury on July 12, Bogaerts has raised his batting average from .219 to .272, hitting .489 with 22 hits in 45 at-bats.

The Padres are 7-2 on their recent road trip through Cleveland, Washington, and Baltimore, with series wins against the Guardians and Orioles, and a sweep of the Nationals.

Matt Waldron (6-9, 3.64 ERA) will start for San Diego on Tuesday. He earned a win in his last outing against Washington, allowing three runs in the first inning but shutting down the Nationals for the next five frames. Waldron has a 0-1 record against the Dodgers this year but has only given up three runs over 10 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers arrive in San Diego after securing a 6-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday, with homers from James Outman, Gavin Lux, and Teoscar Hernandez, and River Ryan earning his first big-league win with eight strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
