Game Preview

San Diego Padres’ right-hander Dylan Cease, coming off a historic no-hitter, seeks to continue his stellar form on Wednesday as the Padres aim for a two-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cease (10-8, 3.50 ERA) delivered a dominant performance in his no-hitter against the Washington Nationals, allowing just one batter over the minimum while striking out nine and walking three. His outing was the second no-hitter in Padres’ history, joining Joe Musgrove’s effort from April 2021.

The recent success stems from a mechanical tweak advised by pitching coach Ruben Niebla. By adjusting his glove position, Cease has achieved greater consistency and velocity, including reaching 100 mph in his last game. Over his past three starts, he has allowed only two hits in 22 scoreless innings, with 30 strikeouts.

Cease will face the Dodgers for the first time this season and holds a 0-1 record with a 1.80 ERA in two career starts against them, striking out 18 in 10 innings.

The Dodgers will counter with left-hander Clayton Kershaw (0-0, 4.50 ERA) in his second appearance of the year. Kershaw, returning from shoulder surgery, allowed two runs in four innings during a recent win over San Francisco. He expressed gratitude for the support he received during his recovery.

Kershaw has faced the Padres 47 times in his career, boasting a 23-10 record with a 2.12 ERA and 317 strikeouts over 296 2/3 innings.

The Dodgers will look to Kershaw to bolster their efforts after a bullpen collapse in Tuesday’s 6-5 loss, which trimmed their NL West lead over the Padres to 5.5 games. Both teams made key trades at the deadline, with the Dodgers acquiring Jack Flaherty and Kevin Kiermaier, while the Padres added Tanner Scott and Martin Perez.
