Game Preview

Veteran Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers is set to seek his best form when he takes the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

Since returning from shoulder surgery, Kershaw has had two starts. He allowed two runs in four innings against the San Francisco Giants on July 25 and then gave up seven runs (three earned) in just 3 2/3 innings during a loss to the San Diego Padres last Wednesday. Notably, Kershaw failed to record a strikeout for the first time in his 424 regular-season starts.

"It’s been frustrating," Kershaw admitted. "I wasn’t executing well and didn’t throw anything where I wanted it. But physically, I feel fine."

Despite struggling with shoulder issues last season, Kershaw managed a 13-5 record with a 2.46 ERA in 24 starts. The Dodgers remain hopeful that he can return to form.

"I wouldn’t bet against Clayton," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "This is all part of the process."

Kershaw will face the National League-leading Phillies, against whom he has a 2.76 ERA and a 4-6 record in 16 career regular-season starts.

In the series opener on Monday, the Dodgers, who hold the NL’s second-best record, secured a 5-3 victory. Home runs from Teoscar Hernandez and Shohei Ohtani, along with Freddie Freeman’s return, helped secure the win. Freeman, who had missed eight games due to his son’s illness, was warmly welcomed back by fans.

Freeman expressed his gratitude, saying, "I can’t thank the fans enough."

The Phillies will counter with left-hander Cristopher Sanchez (7-7, 3.36 ERA), who recently had a tough outing, giving up six runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the New York Yankees. Sanchez had a rough July, going 1-4 with a 6.59 ERA, though he did secure a win against the Dodgers on July 10, giving up two runs over six innings in his only career start against them.

Philadelphia’s lead in the NL has narrowed to a half-game over the Dodgers as they have struggled recently, losing seven of their last eight games. In Monday’s game, they went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and are 4-12 since the All-Star break.

"We’re in a bit of a funk right now," Phillies right fielder Nick Castellanos acknowledged. "But the team’s focus and effort were solid. We were competitive, and a few adjustments could change things."
