Game Preview
Left-hander Matthew Boyd is set to make his 2024 season debut as the Cleveland Guardians face the Chicago Cubs in the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday night.
Boyd, who joined the Guardians as a free agent on June 29, has not pitched in the majors since June 26, 2023. The 33-year-old, previously with the Detroit Tigers, was recovering from Tommy John surgery. Last season, Boyd posted a 5-5 record with a 5.45 ERA in 15 starts.
Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti expressed excitement about Boyd’s return, highlighting his competitive nature and hard work during rehab.
The Guardians, who have faced rotation issues due to injuries and inconsistency, are hopeful that Boyd can bolster their pitching staff. Boyd impressed in five rehab starts this season with a 0.83 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.
Cleveland, currently leading the American League Central, has had a fluctuating performance since late July, including a recent three-game winning streak. On Monday, the Guardians edged out the Cubs 9-8, with Josh Naylor delivering a key RBI single in the eighth inning.
Rookie Jhonkensy Noel and Steven Kwan contributed with home runs, while Naylor has been hitting well recently. The Cubs, who had their four-game winning streak snapped, had strong performances from Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson.
The Cubs have been active in the National League wild-card race, winning 8 of their last 11 games since July 31. Manager Craig Counsell noted the Cubs’ effort in making the Guardians’ bullpen work hard, hoping it will be advantageous in the series.
