Game Preview

After a nearly month-long hiatus, standout rookie guard Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever resume their playoff quest as they take on the Phoenix Mercury on Friday.

Before the Summer Olympics break, the Fever (11-15) suffered a 101-93 defeat to the Dallas Wings, following victories over the Mercury and the Minnesota Lynx.

Clark, who participated in her first WNBA All-Star game before the break, recorded 10 assists and four points in the All-Star game. Her Fever teammates, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston, also made All-Star appearances, with Mitchell scoring 13 points and Boston contributing four.

The Fever are optimistic that the break has re-energized them for the push toward the playoffs.

"I think the break has been beneficial for us," said Fever guard Erica Wheeler. "It allowed us to practice and focus on our game, which is crucial."

Forward NaLyssa Smith echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of refining their game during the break.

Clark, who has been playing almost continuously since last November, averages 17.1 points and leads the league with 8.2 assists per game. The Olympic break gave her a much-needed respite.

Meanwhile, the Mercury (14-12), featuring Diana Taurasi, Kahleah Copper, and Brittney Griner, return from winning the gold medal with Team USA. Copper led the Mercury with 29 points in their 85-65 win over the Chicago Sky on Thursday.

“Kahleah is really stepping up in her prime,” said Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts. Copper, who hit crucial free throws in the gold medal game, is currently second in the league in scoring with an average of 23.4 points per game.

“Kahleah’s ability to perform under pressure is invaluable,” Taurasi added.
