Game Preview

After a demanding road stretch, the New York Mets have returned with renewed hope of seizing the last wild-card spot in the National League as the season winds down. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox are quickly running out of time to stage their own playoff rally.

Set to kick off a three-game interleague clash in New York on Monday night, the Mets (73-64) aim to maintain their form, while the Red Sox (70-67) seek to ignite their postseason aspirations.

Luis Severino (9-6, 3.96 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Mets, facing off against the Red Sox’s Brayan Bello (12-6, 4.66).

The Mets recently concluded an impressive 10-game road trip with a shutout win against the Chicago White Sox, courtesy of Sean Manaea and the bullpen, who combined for a two-hitter in a 2-0 victory.

Conversely, the Red Sox wrapped up the midpoint of their six-game journey with a 4-1 defeat to the Detroit Tigers, dropping the series finale.

The Mets closed the gap to just one game behind Atlanta for the last NL wild-card slot following the Braves’ 3-2 loss in an 11-inning game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

During their road trip, the Mets split a series with the San Diego Padres, took two of three from the Arizona Diamondbacks, and swept the White Sox, posting a 7-3 record.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza expressed optimism, stating, "It’s gratifying to look back and see what we’ve accomplished, and now we must maintain that intensity at home. We’re facing a strong Boston team that’s also fighting for a playoff spot."

The series defeat to the Tigers heightened the urgency for the Red Sox, who now find themselves 4 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals for the last two AL wild-card positions.

Boston struggled to score in their recent losses, a continuation of a slump where they’ve scored four runs or fewer in most of their last 14 games, going 5-9 during that stretch.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora remarked, "We need to regroup and reassess. We’re in a tough spot, but we must find a way to turn things around."

Last Wednesday, Severino pitched against the Diamondbacks but didn’t earn a decision, giving up four runs in less than five innings. He holds a 5-7 record with a 4.06 ERA in regular season matchups against the Red Sox and has struggled in postseason play against them.

Bello, on the other hand, is coming off a stellar performance against the Toronto Blue Jays, where he pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing just two hits for a win. This will be his first time pitching against the Mets.
