Game Preview
The Cincinnati Reds upset the New York Mets 3-1 on Sunday, ending their nine-game winning streak, which indirectly helped the Atlanta Braves in their wild-card chase. Both teams will clash again in Atlanta on Monday in a rescheduled game due to previous weather interruptions.
The Reds (69-75), coming off their win against the Mets, and the Braves (78-65), who edged out the Toronto Blue Jays in an 11-inning 4-3 victory, are tied with the Mets for the last National League wild-card spot.
“This game was incredibly intense, definitely one of the toughest I’ve been involved with,” Braves manager Brian Snitker remarked about their Sunday victory. “It was impressive how we persevered and pushed through.”
The Reds took the first two of their series against the Braves, with Monday’s game making up for a rained-out match initially scheduled for July 24.
Charlie Morton (8-7, 4.24 ERA) will start for Atlanta, coming off a solid outing against the Colorado Rockies where he allowed two runs over five innings and struck out eight. Morton, who has a 3.25 ERA across his last five starts, said, “While I managed some critical swing-and-misses, I wished I could have been more efficient and lasted longer in the game.”
Morton holds an 8-8 record with a 4.15 ERA in 21 career starts against Cincinnati, though he hasn’t pitched against them this season.
Cincinnati will counter with Nick Martinez (7-6, 3.67 ERA), who hasn’t relieved since August 2. Martinez’s last outing saw him surrender four runs, one earned, in 5 2/3 innings against the Houston Astros. He has a 3.86 ERA in four career appearances, three starts, against the Braves.
The Reds had to make a roster adjustment as reliever Sam Moll was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left shoulder impingement, a recurring issue from last year that he hopes won’t disrupt his offseason again. “I definitely don’t want it to escalate like last time, affecting my preparation and the start of this season,” Moll expressed.
Cincinnati recalled Casey Legumina, who has a 10.50 ERA in three appearances this year, to fill Moll’s spot.
Cincinnati’s lineup might also miss Jonathan India, who exited Sunday’s game with left elbow discomfort. Conversely, center fielder T.J. Friedl was cleared to play after a brief hospital visit due to shortness of breath experienced during Saturday’s game. He even pinch-hit on Sunday and continued playing in the outfield.
