Game Preview
Time is running out for both the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays as they face off, each desperately needing a sweep in their upcoming series. The teams, sitting third and fourth in the AL East, respectively, will start a critical three-game set in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Tuesday night.
Last week, the Red Sox (75-75) dropped three of four games against the Yankees, despite a strong performance against Gerrit Cole, leaving their playoff prospects bleak. "You don’t get wins by playing tough games," said manager Alex Cora. "You get wins when you win games. And we didn’t do that."

Nick Pivetta (5-10, 4.24 ERA) will start Tuesday for Boston, facing a challenging Rays lineup. Pivetta has struggled against Tampa Bay, holding a 1-6 record and a 4.42 ERA in 12 career appearances.
The Rays (73-77), after a disappointing 4-6 road trip, find themselves 6 1/2 games out of the wild-card race. We haven’t, but I feel like the intensity has been there."
