Game Preview

After 13 years, the Philadelphia Phillies will have to wait at least one more day for a celebration.

The Phillies will have another opportunity to clinch their first National League East Division title since 2011 as they kick off a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

Philadelphia (92-64) has a magic number of one to secure the NL East crown. They could have clinched it over the weekend with wins against the second-place New York Mets, but suffered a 6-3 loss on Saturday and a 2-1 defeat on Sunday.

"It’s disappointing, but we can go home and win this in front of our fans," said Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler after Sunday’s loss. "We need to improve when we get home, win these next couple of series, and head into the playoffs strong. It’s not the end of the world."

The Phillies will turn to Aaron Nola (12-8, 3.54 ERA), who rebounded in his last start after two below-average outings. The veteran right-hander limited the Milwaukee Brewers to one run and three hits over seven innings on Wednesday, striking out nine in a no-decision.

"Everything felt good," Nola remarked. "My command was solid, and I was getting early outs. I felt like I went deep into a game, which hasn’t happened in a while."

Nola has historically performed well against the three Cubs who have faced him most frequently. Dansby Swanson has a career batting average of .233 against Nola, Cody Bellinger is just 3-for-19 with eight strikeouts, and Ian Happ has never recorded a hit in 15 career at-bats against him. Nola has a 6-2 record with a 4.69 ERA in nine career starts against Chicago.

On Sunday, the Cubs’ offense didn’t require much, but Mike Tauchman, Michael Busch, and Miguel Amaya each hit home runs in a 5-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. Shota Imanaga was the standout for the Cubs, pitching seven strong innings to earn his sixth consecutive win.

"We played a solid all-around game," said Cubs manager Craig Counsell.

Nate Pearson (2-2, 4.71) will start for the Cubs (80-76) on Monday, marking his first start since 2021. He has made five starts in 109 career appearances.

Pearson will look to contain Nick Castellanos and Trea Turner, both of whom had two hits in Sunday’s game. Castellanos recorded seven hits in the four-game series against New York, while Turner has hit safely in seven of his last eight games.

Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, the Cubs have kept their plans for the final week of the season under wraps.

"Nothing changes," Counsell stated before Sunday’s game. "You go out, respect the game, and respect your teammates. That’s what it’s all about."

The Phillies won two of three against the Cubs at Wrigley Field in early July, securing narrow victories before the Cubs responded with a 10-2 rout.
