Game Preview

The Houston Astros have the opportunity to clinch the American League West title by taking down the Seattle Mariners, who are running out of chances for a postseason berth.

The Astros will aim for their fourth consecutive division crown starting Monday night as they kick off a three-game series against the second-place Mariners.

Despite relinquishing a four-run lead in their 9-8 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, Houston (85-71) can secure the division title with a win on Monday, following Seattle’s (80-76) collapse of a five-run advantage in their 6-5 defeat to the Texas Rangers.

"We just need to focus on our own performance," said Houston manager Joe Espada. "We need to prepare for Monday."

Houston currently holds a five-game lead in the division over the Mariners, who have a 6-4 advantage in the season series between the two teams. Seattle still has a chance at the final AL wild-card spot but cannot afford many more losses and will require assistance from other teams.

Before Sunday’s critical loss, the Mariners had been riding a solid 11-5 run.

"We’ve faced this situation before," Seattle manager Dan Wilson noted. "We’ve been under pressure for a while … We just need to keep battling."

Seattle should feel optimistic as Bryce Miller (11-8, 3.06 ERA), who boasts a 1.54 ERA and a 3-1 record over his last eight starts, is set to pitch in the series opener on Monday.

Although he has issued seven walks in his last three starts, the Texas native has given up only two runs and 10 hits across 18 innings during that stretch. In his last outing against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, Miller allowed four walks but limited them to two hits and one run while striking out eight and throwing a career-high 106 pitches over six innings, resulting in a no-decision.

"That sixth inning was significant for me," Miller reflected. "It proved that I can pitch deep into games, throw a lot of pitches, and still feel good."

Miller has a 3-1 record with a 3.18 ERA in five career starts against Houston, while Astros star Jose Altuve, who homered on Sunday, is 4-for-11 against him historically.

On the mound for Houston will be Hunter Brown (11-8, 3.57), who can set a personal best for wins in his second full major league season. The right-hander has a 2-1 record with a 2.25 ERA in his last eight starts. He bounced back from a rough outing against the Oakland Athletics on September 11, allowing five runs and nine hits over five-plus innings, by limiting the San Diego Padres to two runs and five hits over six innings last Tuesday.

Brown is 1-2 with a 5.73 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners, but he has gone 1-0 with a 1.65 ERA in three starts against them this season.

Julio Rodriguez of Seattle is 4-for-12 with two doubles against Brown in his career. He has also been impressive overall, hitting .363 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs over his last 23 games.

It is uncertain whether Houston All-Star Yordan Alvarez will be available on Monday after leaving Sunday’s game with a right knee contusion.
