Game Preview
The New York Mets bolstered their playoff hopes on Saturday while showcasing a glimpse of their promising future.
As they strive to maintain their lead for the final National League wild-card spot, the Mets will host the Philadelphia Phillies in their regular-season home finale on Sunday night.
Tylor Megill (4-5, 4.08 ERA) is set to take the mound for the Mets, facing off against fellow right-hander Zack Wheeler (16-6, 2.56).
The Mets halted the Phillies’ chance to clinch the NL East on Saturday, powered by homers from 22-year-olds Francisco Alvarez and Luisangel Acuña in a 6-3 victory. Alvarez also contributed a crucial two-run double in the seventh inning for the Mets (86-69), keeping them two games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the wild-card race and one game behind the second wild-card spot held by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Alvarez has hit home runs in his last two games and five times in the past nine, dating back to September 11.
“He’s been working tirelessly behind the scenes for months, and it’s finally paying off,” said Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.
Acuña, the younger sibling of Braves outfielder and reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr., is batting .385 with three homers and 23 total bases in his first eight big league games since being called up from Triple-A Syracuse on September 14.
“Acuna’s production has been unbelievable,” remarked Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo. “For a young player like him to step up like this is impressive.”
The Phillies (92-63) hope to clinch the NL East for the first time since 2011, currently holding the best record in the NL alongside the Los Angeles Dodgers and leading the NL Central-winning Brewers by four games.
“The main goal is to secure the division, but we also want to keep winning games until the season ends,” said Kyle Schwarber of Philadelphia.
Megill is experiencing a late-season resurgence, earning a win last Tuesday by allowing just an unearned run over six innings in a 10-1 victory against the Washington Nationals. He has gone 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in four starts since being recalled from Syracuse on August 30, with the Mets winning each game.
Megill holds a 3-1 record with a 2.54 ERA in five career starts against the Phillies, including a no-hit victory on April 29, 2022, where he earned the win.
Wheeler is also in top form, winning his fourth straight start on Tuesday by allowing one run over seven innings in a 5-1 win against the Milwaukee Brewers. He boasts a 1.38 ERA during his current winning streak.
Having played for the Mets from 2013 to 2019 before joining the Phillies, Wheeler holds a 5-4 record with a 3.64 ERA in 14 starts against New York.
