Game Preview
The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to come into the ballpark on Monday with a significant chip on their shoulders.
After squandering an eight-run lead on Sunday, the Diamondbacks aim to get back on track against the San Francisco Giants in Phoenix.
Arizona (87-69) appeared to be on the verge of completing a four-game sweep of the National League Central champion Milwaukee Brewers, leading 8-0 after 2 1/2 innings. However, Milwaukee rallied to win 10-9.
"Frustrating," remarked Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo following the loss. "You can’t predict this kind of thing. I felt we were in total control. It just shows how quickly the game can change. You can’t take anything for granted, and I don’t think the team did."
The collapse prevented Arizona from extending its winning streak to five games and left them three games behind the San Diego Padres for the NL’s top wild-card spot.
Now, Arizona must focus on fending off the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves in the competitive race for the other two wild-card spots.
The Brewers scored seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits against the Diamondbacks’ bullpen.
“No matter how you slice it, giving up seven runs in three innings isn’t acceptable,” Lovullo stated. “That will lead to losing a lot of games if that’s what your bullpen is producing.”
While Arizona holds a 6-4 advantage in the season series against San Francisco, the Giants are not simply going through the motions as the season winds down.
San Francisco (77-79) recently completed a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals and has gone 5-1 to kick off a nine-game road trip, having also taken two of three from the Baltimore Orioles.
The Giants outscored Kansas City 13-1 in the sweep, and their 2-0 win on Sunday marked their second consecutive shutout.
"It’s great to get a sweep against a solid team," said Giants manager Bob Melvin. "We’re playing well right now."
San Francisco needs to win four of its final six games to avoid a losing record. Left-hander Blake Snell expressed frustration about not having achieved this level of performance earlier in the season.
"It’s frustrating because we know how good we can be," Snell said. "Not executing the way we know we can is disappointing, but it shows our determination to win. We’re not giving up; we want to play hard and make it difficult for other teams."
Diamondbacks left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (3-3, 5.09 ERA) is coming off a strong outing, where he recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. He allowed two runs on five hits and one walk over a season-high 6 1/3 innings, earning his first September victory after three consecutive losses.
Rodriguez, 31, has faced the Giants only once, securing a win in 2019 when he struck out 10 and allowed one run and three hits over six innings while with the Boston Red Sox.
Matt Chapman is 6-for-14 with four doubles against Rodriguez, while Mark Canha has yet to get a hit in 16 at-bats against him.
Right-hander Hayden Birdsong (4-5, 4.74) will start for the Giants.
Birdsong picked up a win against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Prior to that, he had gone 0-5 with a 6.75 ERA over seven starts.
One of those losses came in his only career start against Arizona on September 4, where he lasted just three innings, allowing two runs and three hits while issuing a season-high five walks and giving up a solo homer to Eugenio Suarez.
