Game Preview

The San Francisco Giants have hit eight home runs in their first two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Looking to complete a series sweep and finish a nine-game road trip on a high note, the Giants will face the Diamondbacks in Phoenix on Wednesday night.

Suddenly on fire, San Francisco (79-79) has won a season-high five consecutive games and boasts a 7-1 record on their road trip, which started against the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals.

The Giants hit three homers in a 6-3 victory on Monday and followed it up with five in an 11-0 blowout on Tuesday, significantly damaging Arizona’s playoff aspirations.

The Diamondbacks (87-71) have dropped three straight games and did not look like a postseason contender in Tuesday’s matchup.

"I usually try to find a silver lining, but there wasn’t much positive from this game," said Arizona manager Torey Lovullo. "We need to improve our play."

Currently sitting in third place in the National League wild-card race, the Diamondbacks are half a game behind the New York Mets and just ahead of the Atlanta Braves.

"We want to be playing in the postseason, and to do that, we need to take care of business in these next four games," said Arizona outfielder Corbin Carroll. "We’ve got to give it our all. That’s our plan."

Meanwhile, the Giants are reflecting on what might have been during their strong finish.

"It’s tough to pinpoint exactly why," manager Bob Melvin said. "Things happen for a reason. We’re preparing a lot of younger players for next year now. While it’s frustrating, it’s better to be figuring things out now than later."

Right-hander Logan Webb dominated Arizona batters, allowing just four hits over six scoreless innings on Tuesday.

Webb emphasized that San Francisco hasn’t given up after being eliminated from playoff contention.

"We’re having fun with it," he noted. "Building chemistry is important for maintaining a lead over 162 games. During our losing stretch, we might have been too tight, feeling the need to do too much. Since being eliminated, we’ve performed pretty well, even if it’s disappointing."

Diamondbacks All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte (ankle, back injuries) returned to the lineup on Tuesday, going 1-for-3 with a walk, while catcher Gabriel Moreno (adductor) also made his return but went 0-for-3.

Arizona’s ace right-hander Zac Gallen (13-6, 3.74 ERA) aims to continue his success after winning his last four decisions. He hopes to replicate his September 4 performance, where he threw six no-hit innings against the Giants, striking out eight and walking four in a 6-4 win.

That outing was an improvement over his earlier appearance against San Francisco this season on April 20, where he allowed five runs and nine hits in five innings during a 7-3 loss.

In 15 career starts against the Giants, Gallen has a 5-5 record with a 4.12 ERA. Notable hitters against him include Patrick Bailey (3-for-5), Michael Conforto (5-for-21), and Curt Casali (1-for-3), while Matt Chapman is hitless in seven at-bats against Gallen.

The Giants will send right-hander Mason Black (1-4, 5.88 ERA) to the mound, marking his return after earning his first major league win last Friday. Black pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Kansas City Royals, allowing four hits.

At just 24, Black had previously given up a home run in each of his first seven big league outings, including six starts, but managed to keep the ball in the park against the Royals.

He has never faced the Diamondbacks.
