Game Preview

The New York Mets have a clear path: win their final three games to secure a National League wild-card spot. However, they face a tough challenge as they head into Sunday’s matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers, who have taken the first two games of their series.

In Saturday’s game, Milwaukee’s six pitchers combined for a two-hitter, leading to a 6-0 win. Joey Ortiz contributed three RBIs for the NL Central champion Brewers (93-68), who have already secured the No. 3 seed and will host a wild-card series starting Tuesday. Remarkably, Milwaukee struck out 18 times yet still emerged victorious.

The Mets (87-72) now find themselves one game behind the Atlanta Braves for the second wild-card spot, tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks (88-73) for the last playoff position. The Braves won against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday, while the Diamondbacks fell to the San Diego Padres.

Following the series finale in Milwaukee, the Mets will play a doubleheader against the Braves on Monday. They hold the tiebreaker over Arizona.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza expressed the urgency of their situation: “Not winning the past couple of days puts us in a difficult position. We must win tomorrow and see where we stand.”

On Sunday, the Mets will start left-hander David Peterson (9-3, 3.08 ERA) against Brewers right-hander Colin Rea (12-5, 4.17). Peterson has been inconsistent recently, going 1-2 with a 4.15 ERA in September after a strong August.

Peterson has faced the Brewers four times, holding a 1-1 record with a 6.14 ERA. Meanwhile, the Brewers will likely be without starting right fielder Sal Frelick due to a hip injury sustained when he hit the wall on Friday.

Rea, a reliable starter for much of the season, has struggled lately, posting an 8.44 ERA in September. However, he has had success against the Mets, going 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA in his career against them, including a victory this season.

Milwaukee has dominated the Mets recently, winning their last seven matchups, including all five games this season.
