Game Preview

Tarik Skubal is making a strong case for the American League Cy Young Award, and his former teammate Matthew Boyd will be on the mound for the Cleveland Guardians against him in Game 2 of the AL Division Series on Monday.

"Now we’re on this stage, which is pretty special," Skubal remarked. "But I’ll definitely be rooting against him."

Skubal, boasting an impressive record of 18-4 and a 2.39 ERA, aims to help the Tigers level the series after Cleveland dominated Game 1 with a 7-0 victory.

Boyd, with a 2-2 record and 2.72 ERA, has faced challenges since undergoing Tommy John surgery. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to prove his health with the Guardians after his second stint with the Tigers.

"Watching his comeback has been inspiring," Skubal noted. "I followed his rehab closely and reached out to him during that tough process."

Both pitchers understand the mental challenges of returning from injury. Skubal, who also underwent Tommy John surgery during his college career, credits Boyd with guiding him through the mental hurdles of pitching in the majors.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised Boyd, noting the respect everyone has for him as they prepare for this crucial game.

Boyd, now 33, signed with the Guardians in June and returned to the big leagues in August, having not faced the Tigers this season. He has pitched four hitless innings against them in his career.

"I’m thankful for my time in Detroit; it will always feel like home," Boyd said.

In their only matchup this season, Skubal allowed just one run over seven innings against Cleveland. The Guardians capitalized on a strong start in Game 1, and with their current momentum, they aim to keep applying pressure in Game 2.
