Game Preview

Cristopher Sanchez has already had a standout week, but it’s about to get even more significant. The 27-year-old left-hander will start Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the New York Mets on Sunday, aiming to level the series after the Mets took Game 1, 6-2.

This outing comes just days after Sanchez welcomed his first child, a son named Cristopher. "It’s been really special," he shared. "Nothing compares to getting home to my kid."

Sanchez earned the start due to his impressive 2.21 ERA in 17 home games this season, contrasting with a 5.02 ERA on the road. "I feel really comfortable here," he noted, crediting the fans for his confidence.

With an 11-9 record and a 3.32 ERA this season, Sanchez made his first All-Star appearance this year. He faced the Mets twice recently, winning 12-2 on September 20 and earning a no-decision in a 2-1 win on September 15.

He’ll be matched up against Luis Severino (11-7, 3.91 ERA), who was the winning pitcher for the Mets in Game 1 of the wild-card series against the Brewers. Severino is experienced, having previously pitched for the Yankees, and understands the intensity of the atmosphere in Citizens Bank Park.

"I just need to focus on my job and make my pitches," Severino stated, acknowledging the challenge of facing hitters like Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Trea Turner.

The Phillies’ strong pitching effort from Zack Wheeler was undermined by a late-game rally from the Mets, something Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson described as "stunning." Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised his team’s "really good at-bats against elite arms."

Outfielder Brandon Nimmo emphasized the importance of confidence and momentum as they prepare for their postseason journey. "We’ve been playing playoff baseball for weeks, and that’s given us a lot of confidence," he said.
