Game Preview

After a thrilling Game 3 comeback, the Cleveland Guardians have put themselves back into the American League Championship Series, leaving the New York Yankees with little time to regroup.

The Guardians were just one out away from falling into a 3-0 series hole when pinch hitter Jhonkensy Noel delivered a game-saving two-run homer in the ninth inning. David Fry followed with another two-run blast in the 10th to secure a 7-5 victory on Thursday. Cleveland will look to tie the series in Game 4 on Friday.

"Sucks to lose that way, but it was a classic game. We’ll be ready for tomorrow," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

New York had their own late-game heroics, with Aaron Judge hitting a two-run homer to tie the game and Giancarlo Stanton launching a go-ahead solo shot, both in the eighth inning off Cleveland’s All-Star closer, Emmanuel Clase.

"It was an emotional rollercoaster, but I’m proud of our team for never giving up," Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said. "We took a hit in the eighth, but our guys rallied for Clase, who carried us all season. It was great to see."

Both managers now face a tough task managing their bullpens for Game 4, as starters Gavin Williams for Cleveland and Luis Gil for New York make their postseason debuts.

Williams, pitching for the first time since September 22, finished the season 3-10 with a 4.86 ERA and had a loss against the Yankees earlier this year. Meanwhile, Gil, who went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in the regular season, last pitched on September 28.

Gil, who hasn’t had great success against the Guardians in his career, expressed his confidence ahead of the start. "I feel ready for the opportunity tomorrow," Gil said.

Williams also feels prepared for the challenge, noting the importance of avoiding free passes to the dangerous Yankees lineup. "You can’t give them opportunities," Williams said. "That’s when they do damage."
