Game Preview

It all comes down to this. With the WNBA Finals tied 2-2, the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty will face off in a decisive Game 5 on Sunday night in New York.

The Lynx forced this winner-take-all game with an 82-80 victory in Game 4, led by Kayla McBride’s 19 points and clutch play from Bridget Carleton, who hit game-winning free throws with two seconds remaining. Carleton also grabbed a key offensive rebound after a Courtney Williams miss, while Minnesota’s defense forced a critical shot-clock violation.

Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, who saved Game 3 for New York, missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer. Despite strong performances from Jonquel Jones (21 points) and Breanna Stewart (11 points, 11 rebounds), Stewart struggled with her shooting, finishing just 5 of 21 from the field—her worst game of the season. Lynx defender Napheesa Collier, Stewart’s former UConn teammate and the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, made life difficult for the Liberty star, particularly in the fourth quarter where Stewart went 1 for 8.

Stewart remains confident, however. "We’re going to win on our home court," she said, expressing belief in her ability to rebound mentally from a rough game.

The Lynx capitalized on the Liberty’s 16 turnovers, converting them into 19 points, while Minnesota’s win kept alive their quest for a fifth championship. A win on Sunday would not only extend their dynasty but make coach Cheryl Reeve the most decorated coach in WNBA history.

The Liberty, aiming for their first-ever title, will have the advantage of home court as the series concludes in prime time at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Both teams enter the showdown with no reported injuries.
