The Giants snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, winning 4-3 and cutting their NL West gap to just five games behind the skidding Dodgers.
This club thrives on late drama, leading the league with nine walk-off wins. With the Dodgers continuing to lose, the Giants are heating up at the right time heading into their weekend showdown with LA.
Now, they’ll send veteran Justin Verlander (0-6, 4.84 ERA) to the hill in hopes of finally snapping his winless streak. He’s been snake-bitten all season by poor run support, three runs or fewer in nine of his starts. Despite the record, Verlander’s track record against Philly is solid: 3-2, 3.34 ERA lifetime vs the Phillies.
Look for the Giants to rally behind Verlander in an emotional finale at home before the All-Star break. They’re streaking and motivated.

The Phillies will turn to Jesús Luzardo (7-5, 4.44 ERA) to try and stop the bleeding. The problem? He’s been wildly inconsistent. Over his last seven starts, Luzardo’s ERA has ballooned from a stellar 2.15 to a shaky 4.44.
He’s boom-or-bust, he can shut teams down, or get rocked early. He did face the Giants back in April, allowing three runs over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision. Luzardo is capable, but Oracle Park hasn’t been kind to him in the past.
