Detroit Tigers Preview
The Tigers came into this weekend with the best record in MLB, but they’re limping into the All-Star break like someone who tripped on the dugout steps. They’ve now lost three straight games, the last two in embarrassing fashion to Seattle, getting shelled 12-3 and 15-7. Even their All-Star arms, Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, couldn’t stop the bleeding.
Detroit’s pitching has been uncharacteristically bad, and manager A.J. Hinch didn’t sugarcoat it: the team is in a funk. They’ve allowed 27 runs in two games and are hoping Jack Flaherty can stop the meltdown.
Flaherty (5-9, 4.70 ERA) pitched well in his last start, allowing just two runs over 6 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay with eight strikeouts. He’ll need to channel more of that composure to quiet a Mariners offense that’s been tearing it up. In his career against Seattle, Flaherty is 2-0 with a 4.41 ERA across three starts.
Seattle Mariners Preview
Seattle is on a tear and looks determined to head into the break with some swagger. The Mariners have racked up 27 runs in their last two games at Detroit, dismantling even the Tigers’ top arms. Julio Rodriguez has gone yard in back-to-back games, Randy Arozarena looks locked in, and Luke Raley joined the long-ball parade on Saturday. The only guy in the starting lineup not to record a hit was Cal Raleigh and he still leads the league in homers with 38. One more and he ties Barry Bonds’ pre-All-Star break record. No big deal.
The mound duties go to Logan Gilbert (2-3, 3.88 ERA), who’s been stuck in a rut. He hasn’t made it past the sixth inning in any of his last 10 starts and gave up five runs in just 5 1/3 innings to the Yankees earlier this week. That said, he has had flashes of dominance early in games, only to unravel later.
Gilbert holds a 1-2 record with a 4.19 ERA in four career starts against Detroit, serviceable, but not lights out.
Prediction
The Tigers are reeling, and despite Jack Flaherty’s decent numbers, it’s hard to trust Detroit’s arms after giving up 27 runs in two days. Seattle’s offense is scorching hot, and while Gilbert isn’t bulletproof, he should be able to hold the Tigers in check long enough for his team to do the rest.
