San Diego Padres Betting Preview

San Diego comes into this four-game set looking to clean up its mistakes and find some consistent offense. After dropping two of three to Miami, the Padres have scored only seven runs across that series, highlighting their season-long struggle at the plate, ranking just 25th in MLB in runs scored.

Manager Mike Shildt admitted that the lack of margin for error is catching up with them, especially with defensive lapses like Manny Machado’s costly errors in the series losses. Machado himself acknowledged his miscues, saying better defense could have turned things around.

Yu Darvish will try to get the Padres back on track in the opener. The veteran righty hasn’t been sharp since coming back from an elbow injury, going 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA over three starts. His career record against St. Louis stands at 2-4 with a 3.20 ERA across nine starts.

St. Louis Cardinals Betting Preview

St. Louis hasn’t exactly been lighting it up since the All-Star break either, starting 1-5 with a rough stretch that saw them outscored 36-11 in five losses. They were blanked 6-0 by the Rockies on Wednesday, Colorado’s first shutout since mid-May and manager Oliver Marmol was vocal about the team’s lack of focus and poor approaches at the plate.

The Cardinals turn to Sonny Gray (9-4, 4.04 ERA), who is looking to bounce back after a disastrous outing against Arizona where he allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits in just over three innings. Still, Gray’s track record against San Diego is excellent, boasting a 3-0 record with a 1.58 ERA in three career starts against them.

Prediction

Both teams are coming off disappointing series, but St. Louis has the pitching edge with Gray’s dominance over the Padres. Darvish’s recent struggles and San Diego’s weak offensive production tilt this matchup toward the home side.

Score Prediction: Cardinals 4, Padres 3
Pick: St. Louis (-135)
