Philadelphia Phillies Preview
The Phillies remain firmly in the playoff picture, but Wednesday’s 9-8 extra-inning loss to Boston was a gut punch. After building a 5-0 lead, their bullpen collapsed, surrendering six runs in the fifth inning. Despite the loss, Philadelphia’s offense continues to thrive, particularly Bryce Harper, who has been on fire this month.
Harper, fresh off reaching the 350-homer milestone, is batting .323 (20-for-62) with five long balls and eight RBIs in 16 July games. Paired with Kyle Schwarber, who also homered in Wednesday’s loss, the Phillies’ lineup is capable of putting up crooked numbers early and often.
Taijuan Walker (3-5, 3.75 ERA) gets the start for Philadelphia. Since returning to the rotation, Walker has been inconsistent. He allowed three runs on nine hits over four innings in his last outing against the Angels. Against the Yankees, Walker’s career record is 2-4 with a 4.47 ERA, and pitching at Yankee Stadium is rarely forgiving for pitchers who allow too much traffic on the bases.
New York Yankees Preview
The Yankees have been battling through defensive miscues and inconsistent play, going 21-26 since May 30. They return to the Bronx after a 3-3 road trip that included a disappointing series loss to Toronto, where defensive blunders cost them multiple games. Aaron Judge remains the lone constant, blasting his 37th homer (and career homer No. 352) during Wednesday’s 8-4 defeat.
However, the Yankees’ defense has been a mess, committing seven errors in their series against Toronto, three straight games with at least two unearned runs allowed. Manager Aaron Boone and Judge both stressed the need to “clean it up” if they want to regain ground in the AL East.
Rookie right-hander Will Warren (6-5, 4.91 ERA) will take the mound. Warren is coming off his shortest outing since May 31, giving up five runs in 3 2/3 innings against Atlanta. His only prior start against the Phillies came during his MLB debut in 2024, where he allowed four runs over 5 1/3 innings.
Prediction
This series opener has fireworks written all over it, with two potent lineups and starters who have shown vulnerability. The Yankees’ home-field advantage and Judge’s scorching bat make them the safer play, but the Phillies’ offense will keep it close.
