St. Louis Cardinals Outlook

The Cardinals stroll into San Francisco with a record of 76–80, which is like showing up to a family reunion after everyone already ate dessert, technically present, but nobody’s excited. They’ve been outscored by five runs in their last 10 games, which is less “team on the rise” and more “team gently rolling downhill in a shopping cart with a wobbly wheel.”

Still, there’s a glimmer of pride left. Alec Burleson is swinging like he actually read the scouting report, hitting .289 with 18 homers and reminding St. Louis fans that not everyone in the lineup is allergic to driving in runs. Meanwhile, Ivan Herrera has been sneaky good, knocking three homers in his last 10 games.

The real question is whether starter Michael McGreevy can keep the ball in the yard long enough to make it past the fourth inning. At 7-3 with a 4.08 ERA, he’s basically that friend who shows up to poker night, loses half his chips, but somehow manages to hang around until midnight.

San Francisco Giants Outlook

The Giants are 77–79, clinging to relevance like your uncle clings to his AOL email address. At home, they’ve been perfectly average at 38–37, and their only real consistency comes when they hit multiple homers. In fact, when they go yard twice or more, they’re 35-8. When they don’t? Well, let’s just say Giants fans should probably turn the channel to reruns of The Golden Girls to save themselves the pain.

Justin Verlander gets the nod, rocking a 3-10 record that looks uglier than it should. His ERA at 3.75 suggests he’s still capable of mowing down hitters, but run support from his teammates has been about as dependable as a gas station hot dog at 3 a.m. If the Giants decide to actually score while he’s pitching, they might win something for a change.

Offensively, Rafael Devers is carrying the load with 32 bombs and 31 doubles, proving he can do more with a bat than most people do with a gym membership. Patrick Bailey has been serviceable recently, though hitting 7-for-31 isn’t exactly Hall of Fame material, unless the Hall of Fame starts recognizing “almost getting on base.”

Betting Angle & Prediction

Mybookie have the Giants as -152 moneyline favorites with the total set at 8.0. Translation: Oddsmakers believes in Verlander’s arm more than McGreevy’s ability to dodge hard contact, but not enough to expect a slugfest.

The Giants’ inconsistency makes betting them feel like spinning a roulette wheel with only two colors: “win” or “embarrassingly lose.” The Cardinals, meanwhile, are just trying to finish the season with their dignity intact which, at this point, is like trying to save a melting ice cream cone in July.

Score Prediction: Giants 4, Cardinals 3
Pick: San Francisco (-152)
Total: Under 8.0 (-118)
