Phoenix Mercury: Searching For Answers
Phoenix started the season by absolutely humiliating the Las Vegas Aces 99-66 and immediately convinced everyone they were about to dominate the WNBA again.
Since then? Pure basketball chaos.
The Mercury have lost four of their last five games and now enter Atlanta looking like a team trying to remember where they parked the offense. Apparently beating the Aces by 33 points used up all their good karma for the month.
Head coach Nate Tibbetts keeps talking about “finding the right group,” which usually translates to “somebody please play defense before I lose my mind.”
Kahleah Copper is still carrying the scoring load with 18.5 points per game while Alyssa Thomas continues stuffing stat sheets with 17.7 points nightly. Jovana Nogic has also been productive at 15.3 points per game, but none of it matters much when opponents are scoring 92 points per contest lately.
The Mercury defense currently guards three-pointers with the same energy people use to ignore scam phone calls.
Now Phoenix heads on the road needing wins badly before this season turns into one long group therapy session.
Atlanta Dream: Feeling Dangerous
Meanwhile, Atlanta suddenly looks like the basketball version of a team nobody wants to deal with right now.
The Dream absolutely suffocated Dallas on Friday, holding the Wings to only nine first-quarter points in an 86-69 beatdown that felt rude at times. Atlanta’s defense looked so aggressive that Dallas probably considered requesting a halftime safe word.
Rhyne Howard continues evolving into one of the league’s most complete stars. She dropped 25 points Friday while also making Paige Bueckers shoot 3-for-13 from the field, which basically qualifies as defensive bullying.
Then there’s Allisha Gray casually averaging 22.8 points per game while looking completely unstoppable offensively. Atlanta also added Angel Reese, who is averaging nearly a double-double at 11.8 points and 11.8 rebounds.
Honestly, the Dream suddenly resemble a team that enjoys making opponents miserable for 48 straight minutes.
Which is terrible news for Phoenix considering the Mercury defense currently leaks points faster than a broken faucet.
LVSB Final Score Prediction
Atlanta enters this matchup playing with confidence, energy, and elite defensive intensity. Phoenix still has talented scorers, but the Mercury simply cannot trust their defense right now against a balanced Dream attack.
Unless Phoenix suddenly discovers how to stop somebody defensively, this game could get ugly quickly.
Final Score: Dream 92, Mercury 81
