The Dallas Wings boarded their flight to Washington carrying more emotional baggage than an airline baggage carousel. Wednesday’s 82-81 loss to Atlanta was a full-blown basketball soap opera, featuring a flagrant foul, a five-point swing and enough late-game drama to make fans question their life choices.
Paige Bueckers, averaging 20.7 points and 6.2 assists, admitted she probably should’ve taken the final shot herself instead of trusting the extra pass. Hey, hindsight shoots 100% from the field. Jessica Shepard added another monster performance with 16 points and 14 rebounds, recording her league-leading 19th double-double, while Arike Ogunbowale poured in 24 points and Azzi Fudd chipped in 20.
Rebounding Monsters
Washington isn’t exactly rolling out the welcome mat.
The Mystics have quietly won three straight and five of their last seven after taking down Connecticut 92-84. They’re also vacuuming up rebounds like they’re giving away cash prizes.
Sonia Citron leads the offense with 17.4 points per game, while Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin each average 15.0 points. Austin grabs 9.4 rebounds per game, Iriafen pulls down 9.3, and together they’ve turned the paint into a “No Trespassing” zone.
The Mystics also lead the WNBA with 37.1 rebounds per game and own the league’s best rebounding differential. If Dallas misses shots, Washington might grab those too.
Can Dallas Bounce Back?
The Wings are favored by 3.5 despite dropping two of their last three, while Washington keeps stacking wins and building confidence. Dallas has the star power, but the Mystics have been playing like a team that finally remembered the playoffs exist.
