NY Yankees vs Chi. Cubs MLB Preview & Pick

Pitching Took Over Chicago

Friday’s opener featured all the offense of a library.

The Yankees blanked the Cubs 2-0 behind Will Warren, who tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings. Paul Blackburn and David Bednar slammed the door, combining with Warren for 10 strikeouts, zero walks and one giant headache for Chicago’s hitters.

Aaron Boone keeps praising his rotation, and honestly, it’s getting difficult to argue. The Yankees’ starters have been making opposing lineups look like they’re swinging pool noodles.

Fried Loves Facing The Cubs

Max Fried (4-3, 3.23 ERA) gets the ball for New York, and Cubs fans probably just sighed.

The veteran lefty owns a sparkling 6-1 career record with a 1.76 ERA against Chicago. His only loss came last season when a blister sent him packing early. Fried is also coming off an encouraging return after missing two months with an elbow bone bruise, and every outing looks a little sharper than the last.

Peterson Finds His Groove

Chicago counters with David Peterson (6-7, 5.80 ERA), who suddenly remembered he’s allowed to dominate hitters.

Since arriving from the Mets, Peterson has won his last two starts, allowing just two runs to the Cardinals after throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings against Detroit. Craig Counsell has loved the heavy sinker, which has produced plenty of ugly swings and ground balls.

Peterson has also handled the Yankees reasonably well during his career, posting a 1-0 record with a 4.34 ERA in five appearances.

One Bright Spot

Despite Friday’s loss, Cubs rookie Antoine Kelly made a memorable MLB debut by striking out Ben Rice with two runners aboard before adding a scoreless ninth.

Not a bad way to introduce yourself to the big leagues.

LVSB Final Take

Chicago enters as the slight favorite, but this matchup screams pitching duel. Fried has owned the Cubs for years, while Peterson has quietly found his rhythm since joining Chicago.

Runs should be harder to find than a cheap hot dog inside Wrigley Field.
