The Las Vegas Raiders suffered a series of tumultuous and unforeseen off-field episodes last season yet, they still managed to reach the playoffs before losing in controversial fashion to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Wild Card game. Las Vegas cleaned up their leadership group with the hiring of GM Dave Ziegler and Head Coach Josh McDaniels with the anticipation of a new energy and approach that led them to a productive offseason in which they added some game-changing talents. Quarterback Derek Carr and DE star Maxx Crosby were awarded long term contracts while WR Davante Adams (trade) and DE Chandler Jones joined the ranks back in March.
Carr already had weapons to work with WR Hunter Renfrow, who has emerged as one of the most efficient route-runners in the league, and TE Darren Waller but adding Adams into the fold will make the Raiders one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the NFL. Carr almost reached the 5,000 yards plateau in passing last season and will have RB Josh Jacobs in the backfield; an explosive back, who rushed for 3,087 yards in his three seasons with the team. The jury is still out on McDaniels leading a team as a Head Coach; he was a disaster in Denver losing 17 of his last 22 games for the Broncos.
The only weakness the Raiders have on the offensive side of the ball is their offensive line and that could spell trouble for Carr to find his receivers. Defensively, the Raiders made a bold move with the signing of Jones opposite superstar edge rusher Crosby, who disrupts the adverse O-line like no other DE in the league. The duo has a chance to create havoc for opposing quarterbacks. The free agent additions of tackles Vernon Butler, Andrew Billings, Bilal Nichols and Kyle Peko and the draft selections of Matthew Butler and Neil Farrell Jr. add size, flexibility and versatility.
The Raiders already have a brutal schedule as residents of the AFC West and have tough opponents in the likes of the Rams, Patriots, Cardinals, Titans and the 49ers. They will play the Jaguars, Texans and Seahawks but all and all, they are not out of the woods yet with these difficult matchups.

The Bottom Line:
While the dramatic turn of events of last season is a thing of the past, the Raiders could possibly be the weakest team of the AFC West. Historically, the Raiders are notorious at failing miserably when expectations are high and McDaniels’ past as a leader of men is questionable at best and that doesn’t bode well for a team playing in the toughest division in the league.
