Hollywood’s Script Needs a Rewrite
The WNBA is back, and so are the New York Liberty. Unfortunately for the Sparks, they return just in time to welcome one of the league’s toughest defenses. That’s like coming back from vacation only to find your boss waiting with a 10-page to-do list.
The Liberty (15-12) hit the All-Star break on a high, winning back-to-back nail-biters after dropping four straight. Meanwhile, Los Angeles (10-16) limped into the break with five straight losses and eight defeats in its last 10 games. The vibes? Let’s just say they’re more horror movie than Hollywood blockbuster.
Sabrina Is Cooking Again
Sabrina Ionescu has rediscovered her jumper at exactly the right time, scoring 29 points against Chicago after dropping 21 on Dallas. She’s now scored at least 21 points in four of New York’s last five games and looks ready to keep filling the box score.
Jonquel Jones isn’t exactly cooling off either. Fresh off winning WNBA All-Star Game MVP, she enters Tuesday after recording 22 points, 13 rebounds and narrowly missing a triple-double. She also owns regular-season, Finals and Commissioner’s Cup MVP awards because apparently collecting trophies is her favorite hobby.
Sparks Keep Hitting Speed Bumps
Los Angeles desperately misses Kelsey Plum, who was averaging 23.9 points and 6.4 assists before suffering a lower leg injury. She hinted she’ll be back soon, but Tuesday isn’t soon enough.
Nneka Ogwumike continues carrying the load with 17.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game while piling up four straight double-doubles. Dearica Hamby is adding 14.8 points per contest, but the Sparks keep sabotaging themselves with turnovers. They average 14.3 giveaways per game and surrender a league-high 93.3 points, which is basically rolling out the red carpet for opposing offenses.
LVSB Best Bet
The Sparks have enough talent to hang around for stretches, but their defense leaks points like a bucket with no bottom. New York finally looks healthy, confident and dangerous, while Los Angeles is still searching for answers.
