The San Antonio Spurs traded away their one elite player in the offseason, Dejounte Murray, who led the team in scoring and assists and was second in rebounds. They acquired four future first round picks from Atlanta for their troubles.

In this year’s draft, they took three picks in the first round, including promising small forward Jeremy Sochan with the ninth overall pick.

Add it all up and this is a team that is clearly building for the future and would like nothing more than to add highly touted center Victor Wembanyama at the top of next year’s draft.

Having the best coach in the game in Gregg Popovich around to develop the players could add to some surprise wins, but management is doing everything they can to position this team to finish last in the league this year.

Liev Jackson NBA Season Prediction on Spurs:

About the only bet that has a high probability of cashing in is that the Spurs finish under 23.5 wins next year. Sochan will get plenty of time to develop at the three-spot, so that also makes for a solid long shot bet for rookie of the year.

Keldon Johnson put up 17.3 PPG last year and the loss of Murray makes him the alpha dog by default. Expect his numbers which were already pretty good from an efficiency point of view (46.6% field goal and 39.8% from three-point land) to go up as well as he enters year four.

That makes him an enticing long shot for most improved player. But given the favorites at the top of the list, including Zion Williamson who has missed so much time and will likely lead the Pelicans to the playoffs if healthy, it’s worth a small bet at most.
