New York Yankees: Winning Ugly Still Counts
The Yankees are apparently allergic to comfortable baseball games, but the standings don’t care about your blood pressure.
New York has won three of four and is 17-10 over its last 27 games, building a three-game cushion over Boston for the AL’s top wild-card spot. Tuesday’s 4-1 victory featured two-run singles from Ryan McMahon and Trent Grisham as the Yankees went 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
That’s practically an offensive explosion considering New York has scored exactly four runs six times in 23 games since the All-Star break.
Will Warren gets the ball with an 8-6 record and 4.18 ERA. He’s thrown two scoreless outings across his last four starts and owns a sharp 1.69 ERA in two career starts against Seattle.
Seattle Mariners: Somebody Find the Bats
Seattle’s offense currently has all the firepower of a wet paper towel.
The Mariners have lost five straight and 14 of their last 19. During the current skid, they’re batting an ugly .178 while being outscored 24-5.
Randy Arozarena homered Tuesday, but Seattle managed only three hits. Cal Raleigh is stuck in a nasty 3-for-23 stretch over seven games and is just 7-for-51 across his last 15.
Josh Naylor is also day-to-day with wrist soreness, which is exactly what a struggling lineup needed.
Bryce Miller brings a respectable 3.08 ERA, but he’s 0-4 over his last six starts. Worse, Miller owns a 7.56 ERA in three career starts against the Yankees. Yankee Stadium may not be his preferred vacation destination.
