Game Preview
Will Smith aims for the fences and his second straight All-Star Game appearance as he leads the Los Angeles Dodgers into the finale of a three-game series against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Smith, a candidate for National League All-Star reserve catcher, launched a first-inning home run Saturday, contributing to the Dodgers’ 5-3 win over the Brewers in a showdown of division leaders. This followed his three-homer performance in Friday’s victory.
The Dodgers now seek their first series sweep since taking all three games from the Chicago White Sox on June 24-26, having already achieved six sweeps of at least three games this season.
Smith was in a 2-for-34 slump before making "minor swing adjustments" during extra hitting work before a series at San Francisco last weekend. His recent surge of four home runs in the past two games contrasts with just two in the 23 games prior.
"That’s just baseball," Smith remarked. "There are always ups and downs. … Over the last week, I’ve been making better contact."
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remains steadfast in his support of Smith.
"He’s so consistent and doesn’t get the recognition he deserves as one of the top two catchers in the game," Roberts said.
The Dodgers will give left-hander Justin Wrobleski his major league debut start on Sunday. A Single-A All-Star in the Midwest League last year, Wrobleski is 5-3 with a 3.23 ERA this season across Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Brewers will have left-hander Dallas Keuchel (0-0, 6.75 ERA) take the mound on Sunday. Since being acquired from the Seattle Mariners on June 25, Keuchel has allowed seven runs on 12 hits across two starts for Milwaukee, recording nine strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings.
