Game Preview

The New York Yankees aimed for better leadoff production by moving rookie Ben Rice to the top spot on Thursday.

While a three-homer game wasn’t expected, Rice’s standout performance on Saturday has positioned the Yankees to win their first series in over three weeks as they face the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night in their final home game before the All-Star break.

Rice’s three home runs in New York’s 14-4 victory on Saturday put the Yankees in line for their first back-to-back wins since sweeping the Kansas City Royals from June 10-13.

"Hopefully, this jump-starts us because it’s been tough lately," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

Rice took over the leadoff spot from a struggling Anthony Volpe during Thursday’s 8-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, hitting his first career homer in that game and driving in seven runs on Saturday.

Despite a 1-for-9 start in his new role, Rice’s heroics on Saturday marked just the fifth Yankees win in their last 19 games. He hit a leadoff homer, capped a seven-run fifth inning with a three-run homer, and added another three-run shot in the seventh, becoming the first Yankee rookie to hit three homers in a game.

Since being called up to replace injured first baseman Anthony Rizzo (fractured right forearm), the 25-year-old Rice is hitting .294 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 17 games.
